The short answer
What makes a quote fair?
A fair building quote should define what is included, what is excluded, the materials or specification being priced and how variations will be agreed. If two quotes are based on different scopes, their totals are not directly comparable.

What the quote should make clear
✓ Detailed scope✓ Materials/specification✓ Site protection✓ Waste/skips✓ Subcontracted trades✓ Finishing/making good✓ Programme✓ VAT status✓ Variation process
Worth checking
Signs the total may be hard to compare
- The scope is only a few words for a multi-stage project.
- Waste, skips, access or protection are omitted.
- Structural, electrical, plumbing or finishing responsibilities are unclear.
- There is no written process for changes or unforeseen work.
